Komeda diabetes-prone rat developed by Komeda from Long-Evans Tokushima Lean (LETL) rat at Tokyo Medical College in 1996. Komeda non Diabetic Rats were established simultaneusely as controls.
Strain characteristics
KDP rats show 100% development of moderate to severe insulitis within 220 d of age. The cumulative frequency of IDDM was 70% at 120 d of age, and reached 82% within 220 d of age.
Breeding Conditions
Homozygous Iddm/kdp1males are infertile. Homozygous females are fertile but difficult to breed. Maintained by crossing heterozygotes of the Iddm/kdp1 locus.
Genotyping
Cblb mutation is detected by PCR-RFLP.
